Montecassino is a hill 520 meters above sea level, located in the province of Frosinone, about 130 km southeast of Rome and 2 km from Cassino.
Around the year 529, St. Benedict of Nursia established on the relief his first monastery, which derives the Benedictine order.
During World War II, the place became famous as the scene of the Battle of Monte Cassino, which took place in 1944 and has produced among others the destruction of the complex because of Allied bombing. The abbey was later rebuilt after the conflict.
