The birth of the church of San Pietro in Ponte Messa of Pennabilli dates back to the twelfth century, but some documents testify its existence from 912. In ancient times, it was the site of a small Roman colony (the basis is clearly a Roman altar stone). The Roman village of Messa was a strategic point of the roads in the valley.
