The Sanctuary of Monte Gargano (Italian: Santuario di Monte Sant’Angelo sul Gargano), sometimes called Monte Gargano, is a Catholic sanctuary on Mount Gargano in Italy. It is specifically in the town of Monte Sant’Angelo in the province of Foggia in Puglia.
It is the oldest Sanctuary in Western Europe to be dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Since 2011 it is a World Heritage Site by Unesco .
According to tradition, the sanctuary was born in 490, the year of the first appearance of the Archangel Michael on the Gargano.
On January 5, 2014, the National Geographic Society recognized the cave of San Michele Arcangelo as one of the 10 most beautiful caves in the world.
