Boccale Castle

The Boccale Castle is an imposing castle perched atop a steep cliff on the Etruscan coast, known as the “Cala dei Pirati” (den of pirates in English).

From the Castello del Boccale, a magnificent castle recently renovated, it is possible to admire the wild landscape of rocky coast that surrounds it, the crystal clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the den of pirates.

This castle is one of the many historic fortifications and watchtowers that dot the coast road south of Livorno. These defensive structures once used to repel attacks by pirates.

This castle was originally a watchtower, built in the sixteenth century by order of the powerful Medici family. It was transformed into a neo-medieval style residence in the late nineteenth century. After its recent restoration, the castle was converted into a residence apartments. Next to the castle is also a square tower, which is a relatively recent addition to the original building.

From the rocks in the southern part of the castle it is possible to enjoy a superb view of the castle and the Mediterranean Sea in the background: peace and tranquility. On hot summer days, it is a good idea to swim in the crystal waters of the creeks or taking a dive exit, ideal to enjoy the diversity of the local marine life. Wait until the end of the afternoon to take great photos of the castle under the setting sun, lost in the colors of a changing sky.

Castello del Boccale is just 9 km south of Livorno. It can be reached from Livorno by bus or rental car. The road along the coast you there in just 15 minutes. The area surrounding the castle is public, but it is not possible to enter the building, which is private property.

We advise you to use the trip to visit the nearby castle of Sonnino, which is located within 3 km from the Castello del Boccale. A bus service makes commuting between the two castles.
