The Christ of the Abyss is an imposing bronze statue placed in 1954 on the backdrop of the bay of San Fruttuoso, between Camogli and Portofino from inside the protected natural marine Portofino, 15 meters deep.
The statue was born from an idea of ​​Duilio Marcante that following the death of Dario Gonzatti when diving in 1947, he pushed for the installation of a statue of Christ on the seabed; on August 29, 1954 the statue of Cristo degli abissi is placed in the bay in front of San Fruttuoso, between Camogli and Portofino.
The statue of Cristo degli abissi was placed by the Italian Navy about 17 meters deep, was worn down by many divers; the arms of Christ, ideally facing God in heaven, are open as a sign of peace.
