Pompeii ( Pompeii in Latin, Pompei in Italian) is a city of the Roman Empire, located in Campania. Founded in the sixth century BC, it was destroyed at the same time of Herculaneum, Stabiae and Oplontis, in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Accidentally rediscovered in the seventeenth century, the state of conservation of the ancient Roman city is remarkable.
