The monumental cemetery (Camposanto Vecchio) is an historic monumental cemetery of Pisa, which closes the northern side of the Piazza del Duomo.
The cemetery was begun in 1277 by Giovanni di Simone, as recalled by the Latin inscription placed at the side of the right portal. According to tradition, the occasion was given by the arrival of “Holy land” coming from the Golgotha, carried by ships of Pisa returning from the Fourth Crusade (1203).
