The Charterhouse of San Martino (Certosa di San Martino in Italian) is one of the major monuments of Naples; It is by far one of the most successful examples of Baroque architecture with the Royal chapel of the treasure of San Gennaro. It is located on the hill of Vomero, next to Castel Sant ‘Elmo.
Since 1866 the monastery is home to the National Museum of San Martino .
In 1325, on top of the hill, Charles, Duke of Calabria, eldest son of Robert of Anjou, built the monastery. Of the original architectural solution, built next to the castle of Belforte (1325) , remain very few elements:
towards the second half of the sixteenth century the Certosa of San Martino was modified according to the latest standards and grandiose.
