Palazzo Vecchio

Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace in English) is located in Piazza della Signoria in Florence and is the seat of the municipality of the city. Palazzo Vecchio is the best summary of the civil architecture of the city from the fourteenth century and one of the most famous civil buildings in the world.

Originally called “Palazzo dei Priori” or “Palagio Novo”, became in the fifteenth century “Palazzo della Signoria”, named after the main body of the Florentine Republic; in 1540 became the Palazzo Ducale, when Duke Cosimo I de Medici made it his residence; the Palace finally became Palazzo Vecchio (old) in 1565 when the Duke Cosimo’s court moved into the “new” Palazzo Pitti. From 1865 to 1871 was the seat of the Italian Parliament, and now houses the mayor of Florence and various municipal offices. There is also a museum that takes visitors to the beautiful rooms where they worked, among others, Agnolo Bronzino, Ghirlandaio, Giorgio Vasari; there are also an exhibition of works by Michelangelo, Donatello and Verrocchio.
