The Basilica of St. Francis (Basilica di San Francesco in Italian) is an important Catholic Shrine of Arezzo, famous for the stories of the True Cross : Piero della Francesca’s fresco cycle in the chapel.
The basilica dates from the late thirteenth century. However, it is rebuilt between 1318 and 1377 on a plan of the monk Giovanni da Pistoia.
The Basilica of Saint Francis of Arezzo is Gothic , built of stone and brick, single-nave, with side chapels only on the left (one includes a fresco of the Annunciation by Luca Signorelli still young, another the tomb of François Roselli by Michele da Firenze of the fifteenth century and a Crucifix by Maestro di San Francesco (contemporary of Cimabue).
