Montepulciano Cathedral


Montepulciano Cathedral (Duomo di Montepulciano in Italian) is located on the Piazza Grande, next to the Nobili Tarugi Palace and was built between 1586 and 1680, designed by Ippolito Scalza; the building was erected in place of the old church of Santa Maria. The Duomo of Montepulciano was solemnly consecrated on June 19th, 1712 by Francesco Maria Arrighi, Bishop of Montepulciano.
The Montepulciano Cathedral (the Duomo) is a masterpiece of Renaissance art, among his works:
– The triptych of the Assumption of Taddeo di Bartolo,
– The altar of Lys by Andrea della Robbia,
– The Angel of the Annunciation and the Virgin of the Annunciation, wooden statues of Francesco di Valdambrino
– Madonna by Benedetto da Maiano Piccolomini,
– The baptismal font by Giovanni d’Agostino,
– Fragments of the funeral monument of Bartolomeo Aragazzi Michelozzo.
